This is the second edition of the first definitive work devoted solely to southern African butterflies. It is thoroughly revised and updated with detailed information on all the known species and subspecies: their descriptions, distributions, common names, habitats, habits and larval foods.

It is illustrated with 170 colour plates of the butterflies, most depicted life-size, as well as 40 detailed life-cycle paintings by renowned natural history artist and lepidopterist, Gowan Clark. Many of the latter are published for the first time.

In addition, short biographies are included in an historical chapter on some of the colourful personalities among southern African lepidopterists, as well as a comprehensive glossary and a map indicating most of the localities mentioned in the text.

As did the original Pennington's Butterflies of South Africa, the second edition will establish itself as an essential reference work in the field of natural history.
